Laura

My year started off pretty slowly. I had decided that I was going to live in Edmonton for the foreseeable future, but I spent most of January, February and March either visiting my parents in Camrose or driving to Calgary or Rosebud or Lethbridge for auditions and/or workshops.

I did really like Edmonton; my roommates were very kind, the theatre community was welcoming and I think a lot of the work that’s being done is interesting and worthwhile and at some point I would like to live in Edmonton, but in February I put 4000 km on my car so….

In April I moved in with Auntie Paulette and Uncle Brian (and cousins Devon and Fallon). They were very kind and very generous and I stayed with them for 5 months. (I should probably mention that I also stayed with them a good deal from January - March when I was travelling back and forth so much.) Those five months were very important for me career-wise.

I was able to audition for and participate in many independent film projects. Through those projects I gained experience and confidence, I now have legitimate things to put on my resume, and I have enough footage to create a demo reel - in short, after this summer, I am at a place where I will be taken seriously by the casting directors of larger productions (ones that pay).

If I had needed to support myself while I was starting to build my film resume, it might have taken 5 years instead of 5 months. I am so grateful for the support I’ve been given and can only hope that one day I will be able to return the favour.

In September I moved back to Rosebud.
Film work in Calgary slows down considerably after August and dance rehearsals for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe were starting up (full-time rehearsals didn’t start till Thanksgiving) so I decided to move a month earlier than I’d plan and work part-time at the local restaurant to keep busy.

I was a bit nervous about moving back to Rosebud - most of my friends and classmates from my time at school had moved away in the last year so I didn’t know how I was going to pass my time, or with whom. I needn’t have worried. Everyone has been extremely welcoming and I’ve found myself being more social than I ever was when a student.

The past four months have been great! After a summer of film, it’s wonderful to be back in a theatre. Plus, with this show I get a trumpet and a sword! (No, I have not injured myself
or anyone else - why would you even think that?)

In January I’ll be moving to Calgary with a friend where I will find my next adventure.

Best wishes to you all.
Merry Christmas!
