CF-18 - Going Vertical!
Camrose has a long history of attracting the Snowbirds and other interesting Aircraft, and one of our local's, Jadene Mah is well connected with the Airshow circuit and has managed many shows in the past - including the ones in Wetaskiwin that I have been involved in.

With COVID restrictions, the Canadian Snowbirds had not been allowed to perform in more than a year. Our two local flying clubs, the Camrose Flying Club, and the Iron Creek Flying club, along with Jadene, came up with the idea of a "Drive In" style Airshow, where people would park on the show line and remain in or near their vehicles so they could keep adequately spaced.

With no Big Valley Jamboree this year in Camrose, the Jamboree lands made a perfect venue. The Snowbirds had been able to do a few "fly-bys" in various cities, but were really anxious to actually do a full show, as was the CF-18 Demo Pilot.

Miraculously, and with a lot of hard work from both clubs, several service clubs, including the Camrose Rotary club, the City, and Jadene, it all came together on the weekend of July 24 and 25 of 2021.

The weather cooperated, and the event was very successful with thousands of people attending each day. I volunteered to help with parking, and because the parking was right on the show line, it gave me an excellent spot to photograph the action. Needless to say I took lots of photos.

The Canadian Forces CF-18 Demonstrati8on Team, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, and the CH-146 Griffon Tactical Helicopter team all gave performances each day.

After the show on the second day, the pilots and support personnel - along with the volunteers were all invited to a barbeque at the Camrose Airport in one of the local pilot's hangers. It was really intereststing talking to the pilots and crews. They were so thrilled to actually do a show, and said they really enjoyed Camrose and the hospitality that we provided.

The Snowbirds closed the show with this tribute to Captain Jennifer Casey, the public affairs officer from Halifax who was killed in a Snowbird crash in Kamloops when an engine failed after takeoff.
