Friends Shows Snorkeling

Some photos of Friends and Family

Once again, Louise and I spent most of our January in Las Brisas, Huatulco. We go in January because it just gets too hot for us in March or April. We have had pretty good luck in January with temperatures in the high twenties or low thirties. The locals are all wearing jackets, mitts and hats in the evenings, but we are just right.

We have become friends with many people at the resort, both returning guests, as well as staff. The staff work hard and seem to really enjoy what they do. It says a lot, that some of the locals come in on their days off to play Volleyball with Wilf and I.

Our friend Wilf from Edmonton joins us every year, and my sisters and their husbands also joined us for two weeks this year.

It is not a resort that everyone likes. It is spread out, and there are many stairs that you usually need to take to walk up to your room. 200 steps is not out of the question - but there is always the shuttle if you have sore feet.

We, however, enjoy that it is spread out. There are large grass areas shaded with trees where we can sit and read - as well as more activities and services than we can use (Tennis, Fitness Gym, Squash Courts, Table Tennis, and many more). There are also three private beaches; A snorkeling beach, a family beach and a sports beach, along with a few pools (why would anyone go to a pool when you are at the beach?).
Our days in Las Brisas are generally much the same. Get up late, have a nice breakfast in the open air "Mexican Restaurant", go snorkeling, Stand Up Paddle around the bay, read for a while, have lunch, play some frisbee, read for a while, meet the guys for volleyball (Louise continues to read), have a swim to cool down, clean up, and go down for supper, dance and/or play cards, go to bed.

Occasionally we will break up the routine by going for a sail, going into town for supper, or to another resort for a show (to watch our friend Rachelle) or take a local snorkeling or waterfall tour, but these are the exceptions.

Showtime!
The resort has an entertainment group - in addition to running all the daily activities, they also put on very professional shows. The shows are lively and full of music and dance.

Some focus on the cultural heritage with music and costumes from Mexico, while there are also comedy shows and musical themes like "Music from the 50's to 90's. Knowing most of the performers really adds to the fun.

They perform three or four shows a week, so there is some repetition when you are there for three weeks - but that just makes it more fun as our friends want to know what we thought of each show, and you get to notice slight differences and funny things that happen during the perfomances.

Paco is a great commedien!

For the last few years, I have taken photos of the performances, which I then share with the staff. They seem to really appreciate it. Our friend Rachelle left the resort a few years ago, and now performs at Secrets, so each year we try to take in one or two of her shows as well. It is interesting to see what the other resorts look like and the difference between the style of their shows. Secrets and Dreams are much more adult oriented, and almost dark in comparison to the shows at Las Brisas.

Here is a link to some of my favorite photos from the shows this year. Show Time

Snorkelling at Brisas
One of our favorite ativities at the resort is snorkelling. There is a small reef right at the resort - and while it is not the Great Barrier Reef, every time we go out we seem to see different fish or sea animals.

While we haven't yet seen the octopus that is sometimes spotted, we have seen several different types of Moray Eels and Stingrays (Louise always heads for the far shore when we see one), blue coral, urchins, sea anemony, star fish, as well as many different species of fish.

This year, Patty, Ross, Louise and I also hired a driver to take us to Agustin where we had another snorkelling adventure. It is a much bigger reef, but the same familiar fish. You can see more Snorkelling photos on my Flickr Site.
